Qatargas has become the first company in Qatar to secure accreditation from the UK-based Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IchemE) for successfully implementing a development programme for Qatari engineers and graduates. The new accreditation, which is in line with the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), will provide Qatargas with a framework necessary for the development of competences that lead to professional registration and recognition as well as excellent online learning resources and professional networks that Qatargas engineering graduates will utilise for their development. Qatargas chief operating officer (Administration) Ghanim Mohamed al-Kuwari said, “This is a remarkable milestone in our journey towards being a Premier Company and it further advances our human resources development strategy in support of the Education pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030. Being awarded this status is a clear indication of Qatargas’ commitment to engineering excellence and development of our greatest asset – our people. With an unwavering support from our leadership team, we will continue our drive for excellence and see that our engineers are regarded as amongst the best and most professional in the world. I’m sure that the future Qatari engineers, developed via this scheme, will be well and truly on the engineering world map.” In its observations of the Qatargas’ Engineers Development Programme, the IchemE has noted that the strong and enthusiastic support from the company’s senior management has been evident throughout implementation of this programme. The Learning and Development Department at Qatargas has demonstrated a clear commitment to professionalism in designing and implementing the scheme, which was in full alignment with the company’s vision to be the world’s premier LNG firm by 2015. It further observed that the scheme offered a “competency-based culture and provided outstanding opportunities” for training and exposure to enthusiastic and articulate trainee engineers. The world-class process, technology and excellent safety culture have also contributed to the success of the programme. This is not the first time Qatargas has won awards for the development of its people. In May this year, Qatargas had won the “Qatarisation Award” as part of the Energy and Industry Sector’s 11th Annual Awards for the company’s contribution towards the category of “Support for Training and Development”.
