French pharmaceutical firm Sanofi said Friday that it will buy the US company Pluromed and push for widespread adoption of its FDA- and EU-approved cardiovascular surgery aid LeGoo. Financial details of the deal were not released. Pluromed, a medical device company located in the Boston suburb of Woburn, patented LeGoo, a polymer-based gel, to control bleeding during surgery. It replaces clamps or snares that can damage blood vessels, and is used as a temporary injectable plug that keeps surgical sites clear so surgeons can precisely place sutures. A Sanofi statement quoted Pluromed board member William Cohn as saying: "I believe this technology will be widely adopted in cardiovascular surgery and perhaps in other fields in the future." Sanofi's acquisition of Pluromed is subject to "customary closing conditions," the French group noted. Sanofi senior vice president Alison Lawton explained that "the acquisition of Pluromed underscores Sanofi's commitment to strengthen its biosurgery portfolio." "We are confident that Sanofi has the expertise and resources necessary to bring LeGoo to market and drive adoption," she added.
