In 2013 Americans took 10.7 billion trips on public transportation, the most in 57 years, the American Public Transportation Association said Monday. Public transportation is up 37.3 percent since 1995, outpacing population growth, which is up 20.3 percent, and vehicle miles traveled, which is up 22.7 percent, a statement from the association said. "People in record numbers are demanding more public transit services, and communities are benefiting with strong economic growth," association President Michael Melaniphy said. Among the cities reporting record ridership are Ann Arbor, Mich., Cleveland, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Los Angeles and New York City.
