
Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said the OIC intends to carry out a set of development projects in African member states foremost of which will be the restoration and construction of 2,500 kilometers of roads in 13 member countries.In remarks he gave during a current visit to Mozambique, Ihsanoglu explained that the projects will be undertaken by the Organization through its specialized institutions and its subsidiaries, pointing out that a special development programme in Africa will have a capital up to USD 12 billion. The Organization already began to prepare for this project since it was announced in 2008, he said.The project aims to provide 900 megawatts of electricity for 6 member countries and the construction of 700 km transport links, as well as construction of 40 thousand housing units in three member states and other projects for the development of hospitals, increase in residential units and land reclamation .On the other hand , Ihsanoglu pointed out that the Dakar-Port Sudan railway project will be implemented through an alliance with the African Union, which is currently pressing ahead with a similar project, namely a transportation pathway between Dakar and Djibouti .He indicated that the alliance between the OIC and the African Union has facilitated the project’s feasibility study at the time when concerned countries in the continent are preparing their national pathways in order to promote the necessary funding before the actual start in the main project.
