Pirates have cost the Yemeni government $200 million a year in the fishing industry, the Yemeni Foreign Ministry revealed on Friday. In a speech to the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation, Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr Al-Qirbi called for international cooperation to takes actions against piracy in Yemeni’s territorial waters. According to the official Yemeni News Agency Sana, Yemeni fishermen are regularly harassed and attacked by foreign warships. The Yemeni minister praised the coastguards and their role in protecting the Gulf of Aden. He also called for the creation of a special unit to protect fishermen.
