EU leaders want Greece to remain in the euro zone, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has said. "We want Greece to remain in the euro area while respecting its commitments," Rompuy told journalists following an informal EU summit in Brussels on Wednesday evening. "We are fully aware of the significant efforts already made by the Greek citizens,” he said. However, he added, Greece should continue “vital reforms” to guarantee its place in the euro zone, he added. Concerns over Greece’s future in the euro zone increased earlier this month as a result of a political deadlock that the debt-crippled country faced following the May 6 parliamentary elections in which none of the political parties managed to win a majority of votes. As the leaders of major political parties failed to agree to form a coalition government, a caretaker cabinet has been created under the leadership of Supreme Administrative Court head Panagiotis Pikrammenos and new parliamentary elections scheduled for June.
