The Days of Sarajevo Award for contribution to strengthening cooperation between Belgrade and Sarajevo went to actress Mirjana Karanovic, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) released in a statement on Thursday. The award presented since 2010 was handed out to Karanovic at the Bojan Stupica Theatre in the Yugoslav Drama Theatre. "Through all her work, Mirjana Karanovic encourages the weak to fight for their place in society. She has a sharp tongue and is quite direct to the enemies of freedom and precise in defending human rights. She deserved the award not only for her professionalism, but for her public activities also," said Andrej Nosov, the president of Hartefakt Foundation. YIHR Director Maja Micic pointed out that Karanovic contributed to the strengthening of regional cooperation in times when this was not so popular in the public. Since 2007, the Initiative has been organizing the Days of Sarajevo Festival annually in Belgrade, as a symbolic reminder of the start of the four-year siege of Sarajevo. This year's festival lasts from May 22 to 26, and the income from ticket sales will be used for reconstruction of the Sarajevo City Hall (Vijecnica). (ANSAmed)
