Gary Oldman has apologized for his controversial Playboy interview.
The 56-year-old actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday to apologize for his comments against political correctness and defense of Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin. Oldman was quoted earlier this week as saying that Gibson was made an "outcast, a leper" because he is "in a town that's run by Jews and he said the wrong thing." He also said people should "get over" Baldwin's use of a homophobic slur because we all are "hypocrites" who also use offensive epithets.
"I said some things that were poorly considered," the actor led. "Once I had seen it in print, I could see it was offensive, insensitive, pernicious and ill-informed. Words have meaning and they carry weight and carry on long after you've said them. I don't condone or excuse the words I used in any context."
"From my heart, I am profoundly, profoundly sorry and deeply apologetic, especially to the fans because they've been so incredible to me," he continued. "I really feel that I let them down, especially to the younger fans. I'm a public figure. I should be an example and an inspiration, and I'm an [expletive]hole. I'm 56, and I should know better."
Oldman will next appear in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on July 11.
