Teenager Ellie Henderson controversially left X Factor after "one of the biggest shocks" ever seen on the show. The 16-year-old -- the last girl left in the competition -- was forced into a sing-off with James Arthur after receiving the fewest public votes, a result which had the studio audience venting their disapproval. The four judges were tied, but Henderson was sent home on the public vote. Henderson's mentor Tulisa Contostavlos called the result "absolutely ridiculous", with the other judges likewise perplexed by the public support for Rylan Clark and Christopher Maloney. Host Dermot O'Leary called it: "one of the biggest shocks we've ever had on the results show." Judge Louis Walsh said: "I'm in shock. I thought these were two finalists," while judge Nicole Scherzinger called it "a great tragedy for the show."
