Swedish author Henning Mankell says he was diagnosed with neck and lung cancer two weeks ago by a Stockholm doctor. Mankell, 65, is best known for his 12 popular Kurt Wallander crime novels, which have been adapted as television movies starring Kenneth Branagh. "My anxiety is very profound, although by and large, I can keep it under control," Mankell wrote in a message posted on his website Wednesday. "When I went back to Gothenburg the following day I did it with a serious diagnosis of cancer," he said. "I do not have any particular memories of the journey back to Gothenburg. Only the stubborn gratitude that my wife, Eva, was with me." The scribe said doctors plan to conduct further tests to see if the disease has spread elsewhere and will then determine a course of treatment.
