Ancient Islamic gold coin from the Islamic Art Museum
A a probe should be started into the disappearance of an ancient Islamic gold coin from the Islamic Art Museum in Cairo after a powerful bombing that hit the site on January 24, said archaeologists on Sunday.
The dinar dates back to 77
Hijiry (the Islamic calendar).
The interior of the museum was severely damaged in the blast which was caused by a pickup truck loaded with around 500kg of explosives.
There are only 18 versions of this dinar in the world with two of them are in Egypt, said Ahmed el-Zayyat, the professor of Islamic antiquities, in statements to MENA.
It is worth now $2 million, said Rafaat el-Nabrawi, an Islamic artifacts professors.
A similar dinar is put for sale by the London-based Boldon's auctions house, he noted.
