Al-Muwahideen mosque was built in 1940
Al-Muwahideen mosque, an underground small mosque in al-Bayed province (800 km from Algiers), is unique not only in Algeria but around the Arab and Islamic world.
Although most Algerians may ignore the existence of such a mosque, locals know its history very well, and prefer to pray in it especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
Sheikh Sidi Mohammed Ben Bhos built the mosque in 1940 during the French colonialism where Islamic buildings were being demolished.
The sheikh was proud of his Arab and Islamic identity, and found a way to mislead the French colonialism by building a unique underground mosque, to be a destination for scholars and a hiding place for Algerian fighters.
In 1950, the mosque became very popular, and the French authorities found out about it.
After investigations they arrested the sheikh and then exiled in 1954, the year of the beginning of Algerian liberation revolution.
Locals say they prefer praying at this mosque especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
The mosque's entrance is a small gate which you find downstairs. The mosque's construction is perfect; you would think the founder was a great engineer.
