Naguib Mahfouz Centennial Celebration
Egypt's Cultural Development Fund (CDF) in Egypt has started celebrations to commemorate author Naguib Mahfouz 100th anniversary. The event will be held under
the auspices of the Minister of Culture under the guise of Dr. Shakir Abdul-Hamid during December.
CDF director, Mohammed Abu-Seeda, said this event is part of the CDF's policy to celebrate the Egyptian symbols of culture and creativity.
The celebration includes an exhibition of fine arts, at Prince Taz's Palace in Al Khalifa district, which will start from December 11 until December 20, entitled “Naguib Mahfouz in 100 years”.
The exhibition includes 60 artists, with art works that were inspired by the Nobel Prize winner.
The celebration includes also, a festival on December 11, at 5pm, in Beit El Seheimy, entitled “100 writers and novelists in Mahfouz's 100th anniversary”. The festival is organized by The Young Independent Artists Foundation and The Coalition for Independent Culture.
In addition, Talaat Harb Cultural Center in Zenhom district on December 15, at 6pm, will show a documentary about Mahfouz, and will be followed by a seminar in presence of the documentary director, Hesham Al-Nahhas and the Film Critic Waleed Seif. The center will show “The Hunger” movie, which was based on Mahfouz’s novel and directed by Ali Badrkhan. And on December 17, the center will organize a seminar about Mahfouz’s novels, which will be discussed by number of young writers are inspired by Mahfouz’s works, besides, a workshop in every Friday and Saturday during December to make a cover of Mahfouz’s characters.
For children, The Creative Center for Children situated at the back of Al Azhar Mosque will organize a painting workshop inspired by Mahfouz’s works.
In Alexandria, the Freedom Creative Center will organize a celebration of Naguib Mahfouz's 100th anniversary, which includes a caricature workshop, and screening of movies based on Mahfouz's novels, such as Cairo 30, Adrift on the Nile and The Choice, besides screening the foreign copy of Midaq Alley movie, which was stared by Salma Hayek.
