Adel Emam wants President Morsi to deliver
Prominent Egyptian film and stage actor Adel Emam has quashed reports that his new television series, Fortune Teller, is based on the personality of Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi
.The drama revolves around a central character who escapes from prison to run in presidential elections. Media pundits have compared the plot to Morsi’s ascent to power in Egypt. Emam has described the speculation as "baseless," and believes scriptwriter Yousif Maaty is the best person to clarify such matters.
"Fans have the right to hold opinions, but I cannot comment on their interpretations of the plot. All I can say about the series is that the staff will work hard to make a special series for the audience," Emam said.
Emam explained that Fortune Teller is the story of a spotter who is arrested after breaking the law in several Egyptian governorates. "The spotter escapes from the prison during the state of insecurity in Egypt after the revolution, and then runs in the presidential elections," he added.
The 72-year old confirmed that he had initially decided to work in cinema over TV dramas, but was impressed with the script and concept of Fortune Teller, which he feels is a first for Egyptian television. "After reading the script and speaking to the writer, I decided to accept the challenge, at the expense of working in cinema," he said.
Emam said Egyptian film industry is struggling to cope in Egypt's current political and economic climate. He called on President Morsi to respond to the demands of Egyptian demonstrators and work to achieve the objectives of the revolution, including the promise of food, freedom and social justice.
