President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was appointed Africa’s coordinator in the fight against terrorism on March 14 in the Ethiopian Capital of Addis Ababa.
During the handover ceremony that brought together the outgoing and incoming commissions of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was appointed Africa’s coordinator in the fight against terrorism.
Guinean President, Alpha Condé, current Chairman of the African Union, announced the appointment of Bouteflika in the presence of Algerian Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sellal. He attended the ceremony as the representative of the President of the Algeria.
The Algerian President became disabled in 2013 after suffering a stroke. Bouteflika was confined to a wheelchair and has since lost his ability to speak. His deteriorating health situation has made him unable to attend important national ceremonies.
The Presidency announced in February that Bouteflika was unable to meet the German Chancellor during her visit to Algeria due to “temporary” health issues, noting that this postponement was decided jointly between Algeria and Germany.
