Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, will travel to Ukraine August 21-24, her office said in a statement late Thursday.
In Kyiv, Amos is scheduled to meet senior Government officials, members of the diplomatic community, civil society representatives and United Nations colleagues, the statement said.
She is also expected to visit eastern Ukraine to see first-hand the humanitarian situation for people in the areas affected by the fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists. UN officials have repeatedly warned that the humanitarian situation in Ukraine is worsening by the day, and that the conflict in eastern Ukraine, mainly in the areas in and around the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, has affected nearly four million people, including 156,000 internally displaced persons, many of whom lack access to healthcare.
