$6.7bn needed for Mideast strategic response plan

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the 2017 Strategic Response Plan for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region requests 6.7 billion dollars to help five main countries, namely, Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
Only five percent of these funds are secured through financial contributions of five MENA countries, the OCHA office said in a report released here on Monday.
The largest appeal is for Syria with the Syria Humanitarian Response Plan (SHARP) requesting 5.58 billion dollars to help refugees. Only 21 percent of the value of this appeal was secured.
This year, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) received 2.45 million dollars from three countries, Kuwait, Qatar and Turkey.
