CIS holds summit in Tajikistan

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Commonwealth of Independent States, or CIS, following the fall of the USSR. Leaders of the 11-nation bloc have met in Tajikistan to review their achievements over the past 20 years and draw-up a blueprint for the future. A statement was issued after the meeting pledging to form a free trade zone and peacefully resolve conflicts in post-Soviet countries. Members also agreed to continue cooperating in the fight against terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking. Next year's summit will be held in Turkmenistan.
