The Tverskoy court in Moscow arrested Director General of the innovation corporation Technoprom Viktor Matveyev, who is suspected of embezzlement of more than 50 million rubles (about $1.5 million) that were allocated for the construction of Olympic sites, the press centre of the Russian Interior Ministry told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. The detectives found that the state-run corporation for the construction of Olympic sites and development of the city of Sochi (Olympstroy) and the innovation corporation Technoprom, which provides financial and other resources to rapidly growing companies in the innovation sector, concluded a contract for engineering works at a total cost of about 400 million rubles (about $12 million). Under the agreement Technoprom was also assigned to develop a general plan of building Olympic sites. The parties to the contract estimated this service at about 54 million rubles (about $1.6 million). “The detectives found that Matveyev produced in the state-run corporation Olympstroy a package of false documents over the fulfillment of all foresaid works that gave grounds to transfer 53,939,157 rubles (about $1.6 million) to the account of the company that he heads, and he misappropriated these monetary funds later,” the press centre reported. The ministry noted that the detectives did not have an opportunity to question the suspected embezzler immediately. After the criminal case was opened he was brought to the Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Centre for a treatment course. However, already three days later, guided by the intention to escape criminal responsibility, Medvedev left the clinic and escaped. He was put on the federal wanted list. During the search operation operatives of the main criminal search department of the Russian Interior Ministry in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region jointly with the main department for economic security and counteraction to corruption have found Matveyev and detained him in an attempt to leave Russia.
