The UN Security Council unanimously adopts a resolution on a ceasefire in Syria

UN Security Council has last night unanimously adopted a resolution on Syria at a meeting held at the level of foreign ministers attended by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon and his special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura.

The decision, drafted by the United States of America, and released under the number 2254, stressed the need for all parties in Syria to take confidence-building measures to contribute to the success of the political process and a lasting cease-fire and calls upon all States to use their leverage and good offices with the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition as well to proceed with the peace process and confidence-building measures and the steps leading to a cease-fire.

The resolution supports a political process, to be lead by Syria and facilitated by the United Nations and could set up within 6 months a credible governance that accommodates all the parties, denies bases of sectarianism, with a determined timetable and a process for drafting a new constitution.

The resolution supports free and fair elections in accordance with the new constitution within 18 months under the supervision of the United Nations that responds to the requirements of governance and the highest international standards in terms of transparency and accountability.

The new resolution calls on all parties to allow humanitarian agencies immediate, quick, safe and unhindered access to all parts of Syria through the shortest route and allow immediate humanitarian assistance to reach all those in need, especially all the besieged areas, which are difficult to access and the release of any arbitrarily detained, especially women and children.

It also calls on the International Team for the Support of Syria to use its influence to reach those goals and demands full implementation of the following resolutions: 2139 in 2014, 2165 in 2014, and 2191 in 2014 and other relevant decisions.
