Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit called on Thursday for coordinating Arab efforts to handle current environmental challenges.
Addressing the 28th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environment, Abul Gheit urged paying due regard to environmental issues at all local, regional and international forums.
He further reiterated the importance of outlining an Arab strategy to overcome environmental challenges, giving an example of the UN strategy for disaster reduction.
Abul Gheit stressed also the importance of the topics on the agenda of the new session of the council of Arab environment ministers, particularly those related to issues of climate change.
The agenda includes two axes; the Arab plan to deal with climate change issues and the Arab action towards climate change, he pointed out.
Abul Gheit praised efforts exerted by the pan-Arab body to achieve sustainable development, and expressed hope that Arab countries would step up their cooperation in this field.
