The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, FANR, has presented its emergency regulatory framework and international standards and tools on public communication during nuclear and radiological emergencies.
This came up at a workshop entitled, 'Public Communication during Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies', where findings of previous emergency exercises in the UAE were discussed. The workshop also covered the current plans to communicate with the media in the event of an emergency.
Representatives from UAE organisations attended the workshop, including the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, Nawah Energy Company, the National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority, NCEMA, the Ministry of Interior, Emirates News Agency, WAM, and the National Media Council.
"FANR’s regulations aim to reduce the risks of nuclear and radiological emergencies. However, it is important to have systems in place to respond to an unlikely accident. Communication with the public is a vital tool of the emergency response system," said Aayda Al Shehhi, Director of FANR’s Radiation Safety Department.
"The authority is committed to working with national stakeholders such as the NCEMA and other concerned entities to ensure that the UAE emergency communication framework is effective to protect the public, the workers and the environment," she added.
