Morocco’s Ministry of Justice responded to social media rumors about an advisor in the court of cassation who was accused of bribery.
The ministry stated that investigations are underway, but highlighted that rumors have overlapped with facts in this case.
“The Ministry of Justice announces that, contrary to what has been circulating, the issue pertains to a complaint submitted by a plaintiff to the cabinet of this ministry in regards to a suspicion of the mentioned advisor’s involvement in a case of bribery,” states the communiqué.
The ministry added that the public prosecutor and the Inspector General have been tasked with investigating the case. They will work alongside the Judicial Police, which the Inspector General entrusted with completing the legal proceedings.
According to the statement, two officials have been accused of bribery, and the investigative judge in the Rabat Court of Appeals is currently conducting an investigation.
The case has been referred to the prosecutor in the court of cassation. The statement of the Justice Ministry adds that the prosecutor has requested that the Criminal Chamber appoint a judge, in accordance with article 265 of the Penal Procedure Code.
The [Criminal Chamber] has agreed to the request of the Public Prosecutor for an appointed judge to undertake an investigation into the advisor and the acts he has been suspected of committing.”
The communiqué from ministry states that this case will be handled in accordance with proper legal procedures and that the accused will be given the guarantees secured by the law during all phases of the investigation.
