Croatia has been hit by a thunderstorm and gale-force winds that ripped off rooftops and left one person dead and 22 injured, USA Today reported. The strong storm hit the Adriatic coastal port of Rijeka and the surrounding area early Monday. Winds reached 136 miles per hour. Authorities say most of the casualties were caused by falling trees and flying roof tiles. A highway in the west of the country has been temporarily closed for traffic because of winds and flying debris. Ferry traffic on the Adriatic coast was brought to a standstill. In the capital, Zagreb, trees and rooftops fell on cars as firefighters and rescue services struggled to cope with emergency calls. Public transport was disrupted and some older buildings were damaged.
