Eleven people, including three women and a child, were killed after a vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep ravine in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Wednesday.
The accident took place Tuesday night near Sadhna top in Kupwara district, about 128 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"In a tragic accident last evening, 11 people, including three women and a child, were killed after a sumo vehicle carrying them rolled down into 300-feet deep gorge near Sadhna top," a government spokesman said.
Following the accident, police officials and locals rushed to the site to retrieve bodies from the mangled vehicle.
The ill-fated vehicle was on way from Kupwara town to Tangdhar near the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir.
Region's Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families.
Deadly road accidents are common in India due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
