Two women lost their lives and a man was missing after the southeastern Aegean Sea island of Rhodes was hit hard by storms on Friday evening, local authorities said Saturday. The fire brigade retrieved early Saturday the bodies of a 35-year-old woman and a 27-year-old, while an operation was under way to find a 50-year-old man who went missing when the car he was travelling in was drifted away by the floods. The first victim is believed to have been caught by the raging waters while walking near an overflown river. The second was inside the same car with the missing man. The heavy torrential rainfall lasted about two hours and caused floods in several parts of the island. Deputy Governor of the region Fotis Hatzidiakos described the floods as "unprecedented," adding that a state of emergency has been declared in the most affected parts of the island.
