A single-engine airplane crashed near the Salinas Municipal Airport in California, killing its two passengers, officials said. Monterey County Regional Fire District firefighters were called to the scene at 7 a.m. Sunday and discovered the wreckage and two bodies inside, the Monterey County Herald, Monterey, Calif., reported. The National Transportation Safety Board in Garden Grove and the Federal Aviation Administration in San Jose also responded to the scene, firefighters said. No fire resulted from the crash, firefighters said, and the names of the victims have not been released. The plane, an Extra Flugzeugbau EA-300, a small plane designed for aerobatic competition, went down at 6:57 a.m. in a field 3 miles east of Salinas Municipal Airport, FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said. Both FAA and NTSB will investigate the crash, Kenitzer said.
