Two Turkish soldiers were killed in clashes with smugglers near Turkey's border with Syria, a local official said on Tuesday.
A military patrol confronted a group of smugglers trying to cross from Syria into the southeastern Turkish frontier district of Ceylanpinar on Monday night, Sanliurfa province governor Izzettin Kucuk said in a statement.
"Soldiers delivered a warning message, but smugglers fired their guns in reply. One soldier was killed and two soldiers were wounded," he added.
As the civil war in Syria spreads, smuggling is becoming an ever more widespread activity on its northern borders, using increasingly violent means, Hurriyet Daily News reported.
