
Around 92 foreign nationals and 4028 locals are still missing in the northern Indian state of Uttrakhand following the devastating calamity triggered by floods, landslides and torrential rains in the upper reaches of the region on June 15, local government revealed late Tuesday. "3,991 missing local Indians hail from 20 different states of India," government said. "These include 1,356 women and 421 children," it added. Majority of the missing foreigners belong to Nepal and there number stands at 90, government said. "The two more are Non resident Indians (NRI)". The government said the American Embassy has approached them inquiring about the two missing NRIs. Torrential rains, flash floods, cloud bursts and landslides triggered devastation in ecologically sensitive state Uttarakhand on June 15. Majority of the dead and missing during the calamity were piligrims who have gone up in the mountains to tour the sacred hindu Kedarnath shrine. Kedarnath hosts a sacred shrine form the Hindu devotees and is one of the four in the famous four shrines tourist circuits. It was almost completely wiped out in the disaster resulting in killings of hundreds of people. The calamity killed around 6000 people including tourists and pilgrims who were on their way up to kedarnath shrine. The disaster also washed away roads, habitations and other infrastructure in the region.
