80 rescued from stalled Sydney monorail

Rescue workers evacuated about 80 passengers from a stalled monorail in Sydney Monday, treating some for dehydration and anxiety, officials said. The monorail carriage came to a standstill about 2 p.m. local time due to an electrical fault, utility company Ausgrid said. Fire and rescue officers used cranes, ladders and hydraulic lifts to get the passengers to the ground, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Passenger Molly Trounson, 14, of Melbourne, said some people became very upset during the wait. "We were in there for about 3 hours and it got really hot and there were little kids there and they started panicking and their grandma was panicking," she said. Passenger Nina Elhami-Manesh said she won't soon forget the experience. "We were getting nervous and claustrophobic in a way but [now] we're down in the ground and I don't know if I want to go in that for a while," she said. Ausgrid said power was restored to the monorail within 3 hours.
