Flooding along the River Rikkos in Nigeria has claimed the lives of 35 people, most of them children, a Red Cross official said. The flood ravaged parts of Jos Sunday night, leaving hundreds homeless, Leadership Newspapers reported. Abdulhameed Hussaini of Rikkos said six of his children were found dead the next morning. A seventh child had yet to be found. He said the water submerged their home so quickly they were unable to rescue the children, who were sleeping when the flood hit. Mennaseh Pampe, secretary of the Red Cross in Plateau state, said 35 bodies had been recovered. The National Emergency Management Agency said at least 50 people were missing, the Daily Trust reported. The flooding was caused by heavy rain that lasted for about 7 hours, agency official said.
