
The death toll of the sinking of a migrant boat off the coast of Lampedusa in Italy has risen to 82, Mayor of the Italian island Giusi Nicolini said Thursday. ANSA news agency reported today that rescuers were still looking for survivors. The boat was reportedly travelling from North Africa carrying 500 immigrants. The news agency reported that the rescuers recovered 93 bodies, four of which were of children. Several women's bodies were recovered as well, ANAS reported. Some 150 were rescued alive, there were still 250 people missing. Former Italian Prime Minister cancelled a meeting of his People of Freedom Party to follow up the developments. Italian Minister of Interior Angelino Alfano canceled a press conference he was scheduled to hold today to attend to the crisis.
