An explosive device ripped through a Santiago metro station on Monday as people ate lunch in food stalls, injuring seven people in a blast Chile's government called a "terrorist act."
The explosion at the Escuela Militar (Military School) station gravely injured one woman, who lost limbs, medical officials said.
"Innocent people have been affected by this terrorist act," said government spokesman Alvaro Elizalde, adding that the authorities would launch an "energetic response."
Local media reported that the device had been planted in a trash can.
The explosion took place during lunch time in a section of the metro dotted with food stalls. Police cordoned off the station as it investigated the explosion.
"At the moment, seven people have been taken to (medical) centers," police spokesman Mario Rozas told reporters.
