A criminal investigation into the death of an inmate in a Moscow pretrial detention center has been launched, the spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee, Viktoria Tsyplenkova, said on Wednesday. Oleg Golobokov, 46, was held on suspicion of violating copyright laws when he died of an epileptic seizure on Tuesday. “A criminal case has been launched on charges of negligent homicide owing to the improper performance by a person of his professional duties,” Tsyplenkova said. This is the second death within a week in a pretrial detention center in Moscow. Another detainee, Andrei Kudoyarov, 48, died in a Moscow detention center last Saturday after suffering an apparent heart attack. The deaths of suspects during pretrial detention, including the much-publicized “Magnitsky case,” prompted demands by Russian human rights activists that the Russian prison system be reformed.
