
At least one paramilitary officer died while another soldier sustained injuries after rebels attacked their patrol in disputed Kashmir, police said Wednesday. Police said the rebels attacked the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force patrol (CRPF) in Srinagar, summer capital of the disputed region, by opening fire upon them on Wedensday afternoon. Both the CRPF officer and solider were critically injured and were rushed to Army hospital in Srinagar, police said, adding, the officer succumbed to his injuries. The police informed that rebels who carried out the attack fled from the spot in a car. Following the attack, senior police and army officials reached the spot to trace the rebels who launched the daring attack. Recently, India said that the security situation in disputed Kashmir continues to be a challenge and there has been a considerable increase in attacks by the rebels on government troops. The Indian officials said the increased targeted attacks on security forces in the disputed region have left nearly 50 security personnels killed. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the region. They have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir. According to human rights organizations, the separatist gureillas have waged a war against the Indian rule since 1989 which has claimed lives of more than 70,000 people.
