A man was shot and killed just yards from the Occupy Oakland encampment outside City Hall, police in the northern California city said. The man was shot in the head about 5 p.m.Thursday outside a rapid transit station exit in Frank Ogawa Plaza. He was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan told reporters the shooting was the result of a fight between two groups of people. Witnesses said they saw several young men flee.Occupy Oakland protesters said they're concerned the shooting will increase pressure from city officials who've been trying to get the group to leave. Protesters have struggled to deal with fights, robberies, drug use and mentally ill homeless people in the downtown area, the newspaper said.Mayor Jean Quan, who has estimated that half of the people in the 180-tent encampment are homeless, said it is time for the campers to leave, the Los Angeles Times reported"Tonight's incident underscores the reason why the encampment must end. The risks are too great," Quan said in a statement. "Camping is a tactic, not a solution."
