A group of suicide bombers attacked the district headquarters of Gereshk in the southern Helmand province 555 km south of Kabul on Monday, leaving eight people dead including the attacker, district governor Mohammad Akbar said.
"Four suicide bombers equipped with suicide vests and light arms attacked the district headquarters and police retaliated. As a result one of the attacker was killed in his blast and three others by police during a gun battle which lasted for two hours," Akbar told Xinhua.
Two police and two civilians sustained injuries in the firefight, he added.
Earlier, spokesman of Helmand's provincial administration Omar Zawak told Xinhua that one of the suicide bomber blew himself up at the gate of the district headquarters enabling three others to enter the compound and began firing on those inside.
Zawak also confirmed that four persons including two police, a government employee and a civilian were injured in the incident.
Militancy has gotten new momentum since Taliban launched spring offensive on May 12 in Afghanistan.
