Media reports alleging that Russian Prosecutor General Yury Chaika may have collaborated with foreign intelligence services is a provocation, his office said on Monday. Some media outlets, citing WikiLeaks, asserted that Chaika was an informer for Stratfor, or Strategic Forecasting, Inc., a global intelligence company. “All of these stories are a provocation,” Marina Gridneva, spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office, said. The reports suggest that Chaika was a highly trustworthy informant and “a key source on Russia.” The new WikiLeaks documents in particular quote Chaika as commenting on the principle of “Kremlin clan wars” engineered by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as a means of ensuring the stability of his regime.
