Over 200 kg of illicit drugs seized in Sydney

More than 200 kilograms of illicit drugs worth 30 million AU dollars (29.66 million U.S. dollars) has been seized in Sydney during a joint operation between the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), authorities said on Tuesday.The AFP said the 216 kg of drugs, found hidden in boxes of raisins in a shipment from Afghanistan, included 97.7 kg of heroin and 118.4 kg of pseudoephedrine.A 34-year-old man from the southern Sydney suburb of Peakhurst has been charged with importing the large quantity of drugs, and will face Sydney Local Court on Tuesday, police said.The operation started on November 7, when the Customs and Border Protection officers targeted a consignment for examination.The consignment, from Iran is believed to have originated from Afghanistan and contained 3,105 cartons declared as 'red raisins' .As a result of a joint investigation, the AFP on Tuesday executed five search warrants in several suburbs of Sydney, arresting the man at his Peakhurst residence.
