The Pakistani military said Saturday that the Indian troops have killed a civilian along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between the two south Asian countries in the disputed Kashmir region.
"Indian troops shot and killed one civilian Kala Khan, age 37, resident of village Dara Sher Khan in Hot Spring (Tatta Pani) sector on LoC," military sources said.
Giving details of the incident the sources said in a statement that while grazing his goats, the slain man had inadvertently stepped over on the Indian side on August 6 and got shot by the Indian troops.
"Indian troops admitted killing of Kala Khan on August 8 once contacted by Pakistan authorities," they said.
Body of Kala Khan was handed over to Pakistan on Saturday, the military said.
Troops of the two countries routinely exchange fire in Kashmir, despite an agreement in 2003 to observe cease-fire. Pakistan and India accuse each other of resorting to unprovoked firings.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
The two countries had agreed to observe cease-fire in 2003. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the cease- fire remains in effect.
Last year deadly skirmishes took place between the Indian and Pakistani troops along the LoC. Both sides have suffered troop as well as civilian casualties during the stand-off.
