Mexico's federal police have replaced all 348 officers responsible for security at the capital's biggest airport after three agents were killed by corrupt colleagues smuggling drugs from Peru. The Ministry of Public Security said the officers had been reassigned to different states. One of the three police agents sought in the June 25 shooting at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport has been captured. Two others remain at large. From their hiding place, the fugitive officers told Proceso magazine that they had no links to drug trafficking, and accused their superiors of trying to coerce them into getting involved in organized crime. Mexico has been gripped by a wave of drug killings in recent years but the gang violence has mainly been confined to areas along the US border and major ports. There have been no other attacks inside the airport in recent memory. Federal police regional security chief Luis Cardenas Palomino said his agents discovered that passengers arriving from Lima would hide drugs in a bathroom before going through customs. Corrupt police would later retrieve the drugs and sneak them out of the airport. The Mexico City airport is the second busiest in Latin America, handling some 24 million passengers a year. Terminal 2, where the shooting took place, opened five years ago and is a hub for Aeromexico, Chile's LAN and Panama's Copa Airlines.
