A policeman was wounded when militants attacked a police post in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Friday.
The attack was carried out late on Thursday evening at Sang police post in the mountainous Basantgarh area of Udhumpur district, about 220 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"One special police officer (SPO) was wounded when suspected militants attacked a police post here last night," a police official posted in Udhampur said. "The policemen deployed at the post retaliated to the firing from militants and the stand-off continued for an hour."
The wounded policeman, according to officials, was moved to medical facility, where he was undergoing treatment.
Reports said authorities rushed contingents of police and military to the area; however, the militants managed to escape without being hurt.
The attack came a day after militants killed two Indian border guards and wounded 13 others in an attack on their convoy in the district.
A militant was also killed in the retaliatory fire, while another one was captured alive. Indian officials said the captured is a Pakistani national.
A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
