The preliminary investigation of the 2006 slaying of journalist Anna Politkovskaya is complete, Russia's Investigative Committee said Tuesday. Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said the team has now gathered enough evidence for the case against the five men charged in her death to proceed, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported. Politkovskaya was shot to death in the lobby of her Moscow apartment building by Chechen native Rustam Makmudov after he learned of her whereabouts from his two brothers, the committee's preliminary report said. Earlier the committee said she was killed because of what she wrote. Politkovskaya, a reporter for the Russian daily Novaya Gazeta, was known for her scathing criticism of both Kremlin and North Caucasus authorities concerning the war in Chechnya and human rights abuses.
