Cambodia recorded 3,638 cases of road accidents in the first nine months of 2014, killing at least 1,630 people, according to a report of the National Committee for Road Traffic Safety on Friday.
Besides the death toll, the accidents injured 6,023 others, of which 3,476 were seriously injured, the report said.
"Main causes of the accidents were due to high-speed driving, alcohol driving, and overtaking driving," Preap Chan Vibol, head of the Transport Department at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said.
With a population of 14.8 million, the Southeast Asian nation has about 410,000 registered cars, trucks and buses, and 2 million registered motorcycles.
Last year, the accidents claimed 1,901 human lives and cost the country approximately 300 million U.S. dollars, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
