The wreckage of a Russian plane that disappeared near Jakarta during a demonstration flight has been located from the air, a local official said Thursday. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 was at about 6,200 feet when it vanished from controllers' radar screens Wednesday as it began its descent into Jakarta, CNN reported. The plane was on its second flight of the day in Indonesia during a tour of six Asian countries. Ali Umri Lubis, the mayor of Bogor, a city south of Jakarta in West Java, said an air search turned up wreckage in a mountainous area. Rescue workers had been unable to reach the plane and there was no information on those on board. It was unclear how many people were on the plane. Sunaryo, an employee of Sukhoi's Indonesian agent, said 42 invited guests were on the plane with eight members of the Russian crew, but the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency said only 37 of the guests were actually onboard. The Sukhoi, manufactured by a company primarily known for military jets, has been in use since 2008. The plane that crashed had visited Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan and was scheduled to go on to Laos and Vietnam.
