A Spanish diver died on Saturday while he was working at the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise liner off Italy's western coast. According to first reconstructions of the accident, 40-year-old Israeli Franco Moreno cut his leg and remained stuck between metal sheets while he was engaged in diving operations at the wreck. The man was immediately rushed to hospital. He had lost a lot of blood and his conditions appeared serious at once, the ANSA news agency reported. Last year another worker was found dead at the site due to natural causes while two others people were injured. Saturday's, however, was the first fatal accident, according to local media reports. The Costa Concordia, which has been lying on its side since Jan. 13, 2012 when it capsized with 4,252 passengers on board leaving 32 dead, was being stabilized and will be towed away to be destroyed. The wrecked cruise liner, which weighs around 114,500 tonnes and is 290-meter long, was lift upright in September 2013 after an unprecedented salvage operation off the Tuscan island of Giglio. The ship's captain Francesco Schettino was currently on trial. He was accused to have brought the ship very close to shore, which triggered a crash against rocks that tore a long hole in the ship's side. If found guilty of charges including manslaughter, negligence, incompetence, abandoning the ship and failing to be the last person to leave the wreck, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
