A spectator was killed and several others were injured after being struck by a racing car at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany on Saturday, race organisers and police told SID, an AFP subsidiary.
The accident happened during the first race of the season in the VLN Endurance Championship when the Nissan GTR being driven by Britain's Jann Mardenborough came off the track and flew over the security barrier before landing upside down in an area reserved for spectators.
Several fans were hurt with one later dying at the track's medical centre. An unspecified number of remaining injured were taken to hospital.
Nissan said that Mardenborough, 23, managed to escape his car unaided and was taken to hospital for checks.
The race was stopped and police opened an investigation.
In the summer of 2013, a 55-year-old driver died of a heart attack during a race on the same Nurburgring track.
