Subsidiary of Thai national oil company causes spill

A pipe leak at an offshore platform operated by a subsidiary of the national oil and gas company dumped 50 to 70 tons of crude oil Saturday off Thailand's eastern coast, news reports said, according to dpa. The leak occurred about 18 kilometres off the port of Mab Ta Phut in Rayong province, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported. The platform belongs to PTT Global Chemical, a subsidiary of PTT, the national petroleum company. Workers placed a boom around the floating oil to prevent the slick from spreading, said Prateep Aengchuan, director of the Map Ta Phut industrial estate office.
