A suicide car bomb explosion rocked a military camp in Shabwa province of southeastern Yemen Sunday afternoon, leaving six soldiers dead and two others injured, a Yemeni security official said.
"A suicide bomb explosion with a booby-trapped car targeted a camp of the armed forces in Gul-Raida region of Shabwa province, killing six soldiers and injuring two others," the local security official said on condition of anonymity.
He said the suicide terrorist attack that targeted the army camp coincided with other armed attacks and shootings on two military checkpoints in the same region.
A residence, who said on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua via cell phone that he heard large explosions and saw a big smoke near the military base, but he did not mention the casualties.
"One of the al-Qaida terrorists detonated his explosive-borne vehicle at the main gate of the military camp enabling other terrorists to enter the camp and began firing," an army commander said.
"The army troops reacted immediately and fierce gun fights are still going on in and around the military base till now," the source added.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but Yemeni military officials blamed militants of the Yemen-based al- Qaida offshoot for a series of assassinations and armed attacks, mostly in the country's southern parts.
Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, also known locally as Ansar al-Sharia, which emerged in January 2009, is considered one of the greatest threats to the Yemeni government and neighboring oil-rich Saudi Arabia
