Taliban militants after several days of fierce fighting overrun Musa Kala district in southern Halmand province with Lashkar Gah as its capital 555 km south of Kabul on Wednesday, a local official confirmed.
"Musa Kala district collapsed today," Mohammad Sharif, governor of Musa Kala district told Xinhua.
However, he didn't give more details.
Taliban militants began attacking Musa Kala district a couple of weeks ago.
Elders and notables of the district in a gathering a couple of days ago warned central government to take necessary steps for eviction of Taliban militants; otherwise, the district would collapse.
